GATC Health Advisor Thomas Philipson Featured on CBS's 60 Minutes

The episode, “Recognizing and treating obesity as a disease,” which aired on January 1, 2023, highlighted the shortcomings of current diagnosis, treatment and policy related to obesity in America. Philipson, an internationally recognized expert on healthcare policy, noted that while Medicare covers diabetes, which is often a result of obesity, there is a law prohibiting Medicare from paying for weight loss drugs. “A third of Medicare spending is diabetes,” Philipson said. He continued, “…what’s actually going to drive it (Medicare coverage for obesity treatments) is when they have evidence that it will lower total Medicare costs.”
